The European Parliament has adopted a new critical resolution on Georgia, condemning alleged attempts by the ruling Georgian Dream party to ban opposition parties and expressing concern over the state of democracy, human rights and media freedom in the country.

The resolution was adopted by 445 votes to 37.

MEPs called for the immediate withdrawal of the constitutional lawsuit seeking to ban opposition parties and reiterated calls for the release of people they regard as political prisoners, as well as the withdrawal of what they describe as politically motivated charges.

The European Parliament said a functioning political opposition is an essential pillar of democracy and argued that eliminating legitimate opposition parties through judicial proceedings is incompatible with democratic principles.

The resolution also addresses what Parliament described as further democratic backsliding in Georgia, including concerns over human rights, media freedom and the rule of law.

MEPs reaffirmed their support for the Georgian people's European aspirations and said attempts to ban opposition parties would further distance Georgia from its EU accession path.

The resolution forms part of a series of critical European Parliament positions on Georgia. In July 2025, Parliament adopted a separate resolution by 490 votes to 147, with 49 abstentions, expressing concern over democratic developments and Georgia's stalled European integration process.
