Georgian authorities have arrested a foreign national at the Sarpi border crossing on suspicion of illegally importing and possessing a particularly large quantity of a psychotropic substance, the Interior Ministry said.

The arrest was carried out by officers from the Adjara Police Department and the Revenue Service's Customs Department.

Authorities searched a vehicle driven by the suspect at the Sarpi customs checkpoint and seized 109 pregabalin tablets, which the ministry said had been concealed and illegally brought into Georgia.

If convicted, the offences carry a prison sentence of between eight and 12 years.
