The United Kingdom has called on Georgia to fully enforce European sanctions and reduce its purchase of Russian oil, British Ambassador Gareth Ward said on Tuesday.
Speaking on Russia’s ongoing aggression in Ukraine, Ward stressed that Georgia can play a meaningful role in supporting sanctions without opening a “second front,” dismissing “related disinformation”.
“Russia’s invasion of Ukraine is highly relevant for Georgia. We are aware that 20% of Georgian territory is also occupied by Russia, and that Russian forces remain in Georgia. Against this backdrop, the most important issue is how Georgia can support Ukraine. Let me be very clear - no one is asking Georgia to open a second front; that is misinformation,” Ward said.
He added that Georgia can help ensure that Russia does not gain access to military materials or revenue from oil and gas sales.
“Our message to the Georgian authorities is clear - fully implement sanctions and reduce purchases of Russian oil. The UK will also announce additional measures regarding Russia’s oil industry. This is the main message,” Ward said.
