Germany believes Russia could launch an attack on NATO countries within the next two to three years, and the country, as a key alliance member, would be at the centre of such a conflict, General Lieutenant Gerald Funke, head of Germany’s Armed Forces Support Command, told The Times.

Funke said that in such a scenario, logistics would be a major challenge, as tens of thousands of NATO troops would need to be deployed to the front lines. He added that supply routes could be disrupted by Russian missile and drone strikes, sabotage, or cyberattacks, making Germany a central logistical hub for the alliance.

He stressed the importance of maintaining Germany as a logistics centre and managing supply lines efficiently, so that if one route is compromised, alternatives can be used.

Funke also stressed the potential problem of large numbers of casualties. The Bundeswehr currently has only five military hospitals with 1,800 beds, which could quickly become overwhelmed. To address this, authorities have decided to divide civilian hospitals into four sections to accommodate the wounded in different scenarios.
