Opposition figure Gia Japaridze has accused the ruling Georgian Dream party of potentially preparing to recognize Russian-occupied Abkhazia and Tskhinvali regions as independent countries.

Japaridze pointed to the government’s recent apology campaign and subsequent statements as indications of this direction.

He argued that the Maduro regime in Venezuela had been an ally of Georgian Dream and that the party has no interest in reversing international recognition of Abkhazia or Tskhinvali as independent entities.

“The apology campaign launched during the pre-election period, along with follow-up statements, suggests that Georgian Dream is likely planning to recognize Abkhazia and Tskhinvali as independent states,” Japaridze said.
