Political analyst Gia Khukhashvili has warned that US President Donald Trump's announced economic blockade of Iran could pose a major threat to Georgia if Iranian-linked economic networks are deeply embedded in the country's formal and informal economy.
"Trump's announced economic blockade poses an enormous threat to us," Khukhashvili said.
He argued that networks established by Iran could be so deeply integrated into Georgia's formal and informal economic systems that removing them could prove extremely difficult.
"The network built by Iran may be so integrated into our white or grey economic systems that even surgical intervention may not be effective in removing its metastases," Khukhashvili said.
Khukhashvili said the potential consequences of expanded US sanctions and isolation of Iran were sufficiently serious that they did not require further explanation.
US President Donald Trump has announced what he described as unprecedented economic sanctions and strict isolation measures against the Islamic Republic of Iran.
