Butikashvili said the move could pave the way for sanctions against figures associated with the party

A member of the Coalition for Change, Giorgi Butikashvili, has claimed that a recent legislative proposal in the United States had provided documentary evidence that Georgia’s ruling Georgian Dream party is an illegitimate government.

Butikashvili said the move could pave the way for sanctions against figures associated with the party.

“This record now provides documented confirmation that Georgian Dream is an illegitimate government and that potential sanctions could be activated against it,” he said. “The provision recorded in law describes Georgian Dream as an illegitimate authority, a Russian nightmare opposing democratic principles and failing to take steps to strengthen them.

"This serves as a preparatory basis which could, after its approval, allow similar fragments from the MEGOBARI Act to be incorporated into US domestic law, making it possible to sanction representatives of the Georgian Dream”, he claimed.

His comments come after US Congressman Joe Wilson submitted an amendment to the State Department Authorization Act titled “Non-Recognition of the Georgian Nightmare.”
