Giorgi Vashadze, leader of Strategy Agmashenebeli, has called on supporters to unite during planned opposition events marking Georgia’s Independence Day on 26 May.

Speaking on Monday, Vashadze described 26 May as “a very important day” and said people should “see once again what unity can achieve”.

He said a march would begin at the university area before proceeding to the parliament building, where organisers planned what he described as a different approach from previous demonstrations.

According to Vashadze, opposition groups hope to receive a “mandate” from participants at the rally to broaden and strengthen their campaign against the government.

“Now is the time for action,” he said.
