Georgia has provided comprehensive information on Kulevi port infrastructure, addressing European concerns over alleged evasion of international sanctions imposed on Russia for invading Ukraine, EU Ambassador Pawel Herczynski said on Tuesday.
Speaking on the matter, Herczynski stressed that the Georgian authorities had assured the EU that the port infrastructure will not be used to circumvent sanctions.
“We have received very detailed information from the Georgian government regarding the infrastructure that has been a concern for us. They have also reassured us that this infrastructure will not be used to bypass sanctions,” the ambassador said.
He added that whether this information is sufficient to prevent the inclusion of the port in the EU’s 20th sanctions package depended on the unanimous agreement of member states.
“At this stage, I cannot say whether this will be enough. I sincerely hope that the member states will soon reach a consensus regarding the 20th sanctions package. Clearly, we will continue to monitor Georgia’s compliance with international sanctions very closely,” Herczynski noted.
