Chair of the Georgian Parliament's Local Government Committee, Irakli Kadagishvili, on Thursday criticised those he says are continuing a longstanding campaign against Georgia, accusing them of once again spreading false allegations, this time linked to a BBC documentary.
“They blamed the Georgian army for starting a war. We should not be surprised that the same people are now levelling new accusations against Georgia, including around the BBC documentary,” Kadagishvili said.
He recalled that these claims were made “from the highest tribunes” and later reflected in a Council of Europe resolution, signed by the same individuals he says are now reviving similar narratives.
“We must first assess who continues this campaign against Georgia. These are the very people who once accused the Georgian army of starting a war against Russia. They made these statements from top platforms and later enshrined them in the Council of Europe’s resolution. This kind of political offensive against Georgia is not new to them,” he stated.
Kadagishvili added that the latest claims, alleging Georgia used a chemical agent banned since World War I, are baseless and unacceptable.
“Today the same people assert, without any evidence, that Georgia used a chemical poisonous substance banned since the First World War. But unlike back then, they will now face responsibility, because today Georgia and its state institutions are at a completely different level of development,” he said.
According to the MP, Georgia’s strengthened democratic institutions and international standing mean such accusations will not go unanswered.
