Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze has claimed sanctions were not discussed during his recent meeting with US Chargé d’Affaires Courtney Austrian, with talks instead focused on restoring the strategic partnership between the two countries.
Speaking to journalists on Friday, Kobakhidze said the meeting was introductory and focused on general issues rather than specific topics.
He said Georgia had already taken steps and made public statements aimed at restoring the partnership, adding that Tbilisi was ready to continue working towards that goal.
“Sanctions were not discussed. We spoke about restoring the strategic partnership,” Kobakhidze said.
He added that restoring the partnership would pave the way for further cooperation across all areas, including sanctions and other issues.
He added the US side gave a general response that engagement between the two countries should continue.
