Georgia’s European integration remains one of the country’s most important constitutional objectives, and the government will do everything possible to advance it, Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze said.
Speaking to journalists on Monday, Kobakhidze acknowledged that the process faces “serious challenges” but expressed hope that the situation would change in the future.
“What is written in the Constitution was written by my own hand. As for European integration, it is one of our most important constitutional objectives, and everything possible will be done in this direction,” he said.
In separate remarks, Kobakhidze accused politicians of attempting to interfere in constitutional justice and politicise the proceedings by referring to the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg.
He said politicians should refrain from commenting on constitutional justice and allow the Constitutional Court to reach its decision on a lawsuit seeking to declare several opposition parties unconstitutional and ban them.
“We have witnessed an attempt at political interference in constitutional justice, and now there is an attempt to politicise it by invoking the Strasbourg Court. This is wrong,” Kobakhidze said.
The PM described the legal grounds for banning the parties as clear and well-founded, adding that the government was prepared for any eventuality.
He also referred to previous elections in Georgia, alleging that the United National Movement and opposition forces had repeatedly attempted to reject election results in 2012, 2016, 2020 and 2024.
Kobakhidze further criticised “European bureaucracy”, accusing it of previously “supporting the use of Molotov cocktails” and now making political statements against constitutional justice.
The Constitutional Court is reviewing a lawsuit filed by the ruling Georgian Dream party seeking to declare five opposition parties unconstitutional and ban their activities.
