Parliament’s Diaspora Committee Chair Irakli Zarkua on Saturday criticised the United Kingdom’s recent sanctions decision, calling it another baseless move against Georgia.

“We remember when their resolutions included all kinds of absurd claims. Later, a US delegation came, failed to find any evidence of [Georgia bypassing sanctions], and admitted those allegations were groundless. Now we are dealing with another similar act,” Zarkua said.

He noted accusations against Georgia were not new, but what matters is that the country continues to uphold international standards and order. He reaffirmed that Georgia’s strategic choice remains “towards Europe, with peace and dignity.”

“These are certain European bureaucrats whose interest is to stage upheaval here, place their agents in power, and for that they are ready to do anything. Whether it’s the US Congress or the UK House of Lords, everywhere there are lobbying groups fighting against our country, trying to smear Georgia and fabricate nonsense. This is nothing new to us — we have seen much of it before. For us, the key point is that we uphold international standards and rules,” Zarkua stated.

He also pointed to criticism from Baltic leaders, saying: “Let Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, and [Kaja] Kallas first ban their own families from trading with Russia before lecturing others on morality. Our choice is already made - it is Europe, with peace and dignity - and we will maintain it.”
