Iran says Oman deal would not automatically mean reopening of Strait of Hormuz

Iran says a potential agreement with Oman on shipping arrangements in the Strait of Hormuz would not automatically mean the strategic waterway has fully reopened or become secure.

Tehran and Muscat have reached an understanding on the geographic coordinates of a proposed shipping route through the strait, while work on finalising the arrangement continues.

Iranian officials have stressed that an agreement with Oman alone would not be sufficient to guarantee safe navigation through the waterway amid the continuing conflict and tensions involving the United States.

The proposed arrangement could give Iran significant control over vessels entering the Gulf through the Strait of Hormuz. However, shipping industry sources have raised concerns over whether the plan would be commercially and operationally viable.

Uncertainty surrounding the negotiations has also affected global energy markets, with oil prices remaining sensitive to developments concerning the strait.

The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most important energy corridors and disruptions to commercial shipping through the waterway have significant implications for global oil and gas supplies.
