Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps has warned that any attack on Iran’s energy infrastructure or ports would trigger a “destructive” response targeting oil and gas facilities across the region.
In a statement this week, the IRGC said even the smallest strike against Iran’s energy sector would be met with retaliation against regional infrastructure in which the United States and its Western allies have interests.
The warning comes amid escalating tensions following ongoing US military operations in Iran. According to Iranian sources, the United States has struck more than 5,500 targets in the country since the start of the campaign, including more than 60 vessels.
The situation has raised concerns about the potential impact on global energy supplies. Earlier reports suggested Tehran might consider mining the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz, a move that could disrupt a major artery of the world’s oil trade and threaten international energy markets.
Responding to the reports, Donald Trump said that if the claims were true, Tehran would face “serious consequences”.
The New York Times has also reported that the US president may have underestimated Iran’s military capabilities, a miscalculation analysts say could increase risks for US security if the conflict escalates further.
Earlier, Trump said the United States had effectively won the war against Iran, adding that the only remaining question was when exactly the fighting would end.
Meanwhile, Iran’s supreme leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, issued his first public remarks since taking office, warning that all American military bases in the Middle East should be closed immediately. He added that the bases would otherwise become targets for attack.
