The European Parliament has expressed full solidarity with the Georgian people and what it described as political prisoners, according to Rasa Juknevičienė.

In a statement posted on social media on Tuesday, Juknevičienė said this position was reaffirmed in a resolution adopted in March.

She referred to the case of Elene Khoshtaria, a leader of the Coalition for Change, who has been sentenced to one year and six months in prison. “There is no place for political prisoners in a country that is a candidate for EU membership,” she wrote.

The European Parliament, she added, “expresses full solidarity with the Georgian people and political prisoners,” reiterating its stance outlined in the March resolution.

Khoshtaria was sentenced over the damage of an election banner belonging to Tbilisi Mayor Kakha Kaladze. She has already served six months in detention and is expected to leave prison in one year.
