The construction of the Anaklia Deep-Sea Port has entered a new phase following the arrival of the first dredging vessel, Tristao Da Cunha, in the port’s maritime area, according to Ivane Abashidze, Director of Georgia’s Maritime Transport Agency.
Abashidze described the development as a “historic day,” noting that, once all procedures required under Georgian legislation are completed, the vessel will begin dredging works for the construction of the port’s breakwater channel.
The first dredger will initially carry out seabed excavation works for the breakwater. A second dredging vessel is expected to join the project within the coming weeks to deepen the port’s entrance channel and the inner harbor basin.
According to the Maritime Transport Agency, cargo throughput at Georgia’s seaports has increased significantly in recent years, placing existing port infrastructure under growing capacity pressure. The agency says the Anaklia Deep-Sea Port will strengthen the Middle Corridor by increasing cargo handling capacity and improving transport links between Central Asia, other parts of Asia, and Europe.
As part of the current phase, the seabed in Anaklia’s maritime area will be dredged to a depth of 17.5 meters. The next stage of the project предусматривает the construction of a 1,380-meter-long breakwater, with the works proceeding in line with the approved implementation schedule.
