A group of professors and educators from Georgian universities has issued a strong statement condemning what they describe as Bidzina Ivanishvili’s “anti-democratic and Russian-style regime,” accusing it of attempting to maintain illegitimately seized power through “criminal elections.”

In their address, the professors reject the upcoming local elections, labeling them a “soft power operation” orchestrated by Russia aimed at undermining Georgia’s sovereignty and democracy. They are calling instead for free and fair parliamentary elections as the only legitimate expression of the people’s will.

“We categorically refuse to participate in the so-called self-government elections, which are nothing more than a Russian soft power tool and a special operation against Georgia’s sovereignty and democracy,” the statement reads.

The educators reaffirm their commitment to the ideals of a free, just, and democratic society, grounded in the rule of law and human dignity. They call on fellow citizens, students, and academic colleagues to join a protest on July 19 at 19:00 in the courtyard of Tbilisi State University (TSU), from where a demonstration will march toward the Parliament building.

One professor addressed the ruling authorities directly:

“You will not intimidate us. Today, when we have around 60 political prisoners—young men and women behind bars—when teachers like Nino and Mzia Amaghlobeli are imprisoned, losing a job or position fades in comparison to the tragedies we are witnessing.”

The statement concludes with an appeal for solidarity:

“We urge everyone, especially students and colleagues, to join us in this just struggle.”

The protest comes amid heightened tensions over Georgia’s political trajectory and concerns about democratic backsliding under the ruling Georgian Dream party.
