An employee of Georgia’s Security Police Department has been arrested on charges of accepting a bribe, the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) said on Saturday.
According to the MIA’s General Inspection, the arrest was carried out on the basis of a court ruling. The detainee, identified by the initials A.M. and born in 2002, is accused of taking money from a citizen in exchange for providing protection for unauthorised street trading in the Batumi Boulevard area, which fell within his area of responsibility.
Investigators say the officer allegedly accepted a sum of money as a bribe in return for patronage of the illegal activity.
Following investigative actions, General Inspection officers detained A.M. as a defendant in the case.
The crime is punishable by six to nine years’ imprisonment.
