European countries must stop waiting on former US President Donald Trump and instead craft their own peace initiative for Ukraine, EU Commissioner for Defence Andrius Kubilius said in an interview with POLITICO.
Kubilius argued that the European Union must demonstrate greater geopolitical independence, or at least be prepared to take a stronger stance, by formulating its own vision for how peace can be achieved in Ukraine and then discussing that plan with its transatlantic partners.
“Each six months, we're getting new plans and in some way I feel that we are waiting here to know the plans that will come from Washington this year. The plans should come also from Brussels or from Berlin,” Kubilius said.
Kubilius stressed that Europe should be capable of evaluating and comparing multiple approaches.
"We should have the possibility to discuss two plans: one that is European and another one, maybe, prepared by our American friends”, he said.
