Latvia’s Foreign Ministry said Riga firmly supported Georgia’s democracy and the European aspirations of its people

Latvia has extended congratulations and best wishes to the Georgian people on the occasion of Georgia’s Independence Day, reaffirming its support for the country’s democratic development and European aspirations.

Latvia’s Foreign Ministry said Riga firmly supported Georgia’s democracy and the European aspirations of its people.

Georgia marks Independence Day on 26 May, commemorating the declaration of independence by the National Council of Georgia in 1918.

The Democratic Republic of Georgia, whose independence was recognised by leading European states, ceased to exist less than three years later following the Soviet Russian occupation. Georgia restored its independence on 9 April 1991, after 70 years of Soviet rule.
