Russian Foreign Minister says contacts with Georgia maintained as needed

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated that Russia maintains contact with Georgia when necessary, despite the absence of formal diplomatic relations between the two countries. Speaking at the “3+3” format meeting, Lavrov highlighted that Russian diplomats working through Switzerland’s embassy in Georgia can engage with Georgian counterparts on key issues such as trade, tourism, and direct people-to-people connections.

Lavrov reiterated that the platform within the “3+3” framework, which includes regional countries, remains open to Georgia. He expressed hope that, over time, Georgia would join in the platform’s work.

“We have contacts with Tbilisi when necessary. Our diplomats at the Swiss embassy’s interest section can discuss current issues, particularly related to trade, tourism, and direct contacts between people with Georgia’s relevant authorities,” Lavrov stated.

The “3+3” platform is designed for regional dialogue involving Russia, Turkey, Iran, and the South Caucasus countries. Despite Georgia’s hesitance to participate, Lavrov emphasized that the doors remain open for its involvement.
