MEP Lexmann on Georgian elections: ODIHR influenced by regimes opposed to free, fair elections

European Parliament member Miriam Lexmann has raised concerns about the impartiality of the OSCE’s Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR), claiming it operates under the influence of regimes that undermine electoral integrity.

“Unfortunately, we know that ODIHR is under the influence of regimes that are not interested in free and fair elections,” said Lexmann as the mission did not question the legitimacy of the October 26 general elections. “We need an investigative process free from such influence to ensure fair results. If it is proven that these elections were rigged, the international community must consider the consequences.”

Lexmann emphasized the need for transparency from the Georgian authorities, calling for public disclosure of election details.

“We have ample evidence indicating these elections were neither free nor fair. It is now crucial for the international community to demand that the Georgian government make these details public. Until this happens, recognizing the election results is entirely out of the question,” she said.

The MEP also advocated for targeted sanctions against individuals responsible for alleged electoral misconduct.

“Sanctioning everyone involved in the fraud is impractical, but we must impose sanctions on those directly accountable for these violations,” Lexmann added.
