Georgia’s Public Defender Levan Ioseliani visited the No. 6 Penitentiary Facility on Thursday to inspect the conditions of detained opposition leader and his former ally Aleksandre Elisashvili.

Ioseliani met with Elisashvili and other inmates held at the facility, assessing their placement conditions and individual living spaces, the Ombudsman’s press office said.

The Public Defender also toured the institution’s infrastructure, including a newly opened woodworking workshop.

During the visit, Ioseliani reviewed the rehabilitation and resocialization programs available to defendants and convicts, and held discussions with the facility’s administration regarding ongoing conditions and detainee welfare.

The Ombudsman’s Office said that the visit formed part of its mandate to monitor treatment standards, ensure detainee rights were upheld, and assess the overall environment within Georgia’s penitentiary system.
