Levan Machavariani, a member of Georgia’s parliamentary majority, said the overwhelming majority of Georgian society clearly understands “whom these agents serve,” referring to representatives of the opposition and several non-governmental organizations.
Speaking to reporters, Machavariani claimed that neither Droa leader Elene Khoshtaria, nor what he described as the “agent opposition,” nor NGOs affiliated with them “are capable of achieving anything,” arguing that they have already been “exposed.”
“The situation remains unchanged. Especially over the past few years, we have seen these actors shape their agenda through radicalism, extremism, and political terrorism, while expecting support from external forces that are interfering in Georgia’s internal affairs,” Machavariani said.
He further alleged that the McCain Institute provided the opposition with “guidelines” following Georgia’s 2024 parliamentary elections, which, according to him, called for turning protests into civil confrontation and creating casualties.
“This is exactly what we are fighting against. Extremism and fascism will come to an end in Georgia once and for all. Neither Elene Khoshtaria, nor the representatives of the so-called agent opposition, nor the NGOs affiliated with them, including Lomjaria and Gigauri, are capable of achieving anything. They have been exposed. The overwhelming majority of our society clearly understands whom these agents serve. They serve everyone and everything except Georgia’s national interests,” Machavariani stated.
His remarks came in response to comments made by Droa leader Elene Khoshtaria during a telephone interview with TV Pirveli from prison. Speaking about the need for continued protests, Khoshtaria said: “We must tell our partners: ‘Look, people are being arrested and beaten, yet another 300,000 people have taken to the streets. We know what needs to be done. We ask for something very simple, whatever these five points may be, they must be enforced. There should be concentrated pressure. While 300,000 people are here, everyone abroad should know that we are moving toward this culmination.’”
