Georgian Dream MP claims coordinated campaign is seeking to discredit Trump administration

Georgian Dream MP Levan Machavariani has claimed that political and media groups opposed to US President Donald Trump are running a coordinated campaign to discredit his administration, citing disagreements over the war in Ukraine, migration, LGBT issues and the role of Western-funded organisations.

Machavariani, First Deputy Chairman of the ruling Georgian Dream parliamentary faction, made the remarks in a social media post.

He argued that Trump had challenged what he described as the political establishment in Brussels and had taken positions that conflicted with the agenda of “informal oligarchic forces.”

“Several days ago, Brussels said that candidate countries were ‘prohibited’ from maintaining relations with Mr Trump’s administration,” Machavariani wrote, claiming that efforts to reinforce that message had also been assigned to what he described as “Deep State agents” outside Brussels.

According to Machavariani, the campaign against Trump and his administration is driven by several factors.

He said Trump had described the Russia-Ukraine war as a proxy conflict between the West and Russia and had portrayed Ukraine as a state used in that confrontation. Machavariani also argued that Trump was the only major Western leader genuinely seeking to end the war.

He further claimed that Trump had exposed what he called “Brussels’ ruling class,” accusing it of leading Europe towards a “civilisational abyss.”

Machavariani also pointed to Trump’s criticism of non-governmental organisations and US-funded bodies, including USAID and the National Endowment for Democracy, claiming that such organisations had financed political upheaval in other countries.

He additionally cited Trump’s opposition to what he described as “LGBT propaganda” and uncontrolled migration.

“None of this, to put it mildly, fits the agenda of informal oligarchic rule,” Machavariani wrote.

He claimed that politicians and media outlets aligned with those forces would therefore continue efforts to damage the reputation of Trump’s administration.

“Ultra-left, pseudo-liberal politicians and their media outlets controlled by these forces will do everything possible to discredit his administration,” Machavariani said.
