French Member of the European Parliament (MEP) Nathalie Loiseau has issued a strong statement condemning threats made by Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze against President Salome Zourabichvili.
In a social media post, Loiseau wrote:
“The Georgian ‘Prime Minister’ (the quotation marks remind us that he came from a rigged election) threatens the legitimate President, @Zourabichvili_S, and imagines her behind bars. We will not let the ruling party attempt to undermine the freedom of Georgians and their President.”
Her remarks follow recent statements by Kobakhidze, who suggested that Zourabichvili could face imprisonment if she resists leaving the presidential residence after her term ends. Speaking earlier today, Kobakhidze stated:
“Let’s see where Salome Zourabichvili will continue to live – behind bars or outside. If she fortifies herself in the presidential administration, that would constitute a criminal offense. Nobody wants to imprison a 72-year-old woman, but she will sacrifice everyone who stands with her in the residence.”
