French President Emmanuel Macron on Wednesday said US President Donald Trump agreed with G7 leaders that Russia has shown “no serious desire” to engage in peace negotiations over the war in Ukraine.
Macron said the United States had made significant efforts to establish dialogue with Moscow, but those attempts had produced no meaningful results.
“Several months have passed since the Americans took the initiative and I want to commend them for that. They said they would engage with Russia because they had the opportunity to do so,” Macron said.
The President noted that Washington's outreach had not been met with a constructive response from Russia. He added that European leaders had also sought dialogue, while Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy had expressed readiness to hold full-scale negotiations aimed at reaching an agreement with Moscow.
According to Macron, Russian President Vladimir Putin rejected those efforts.
Macron said Trump now shares the assessment of G7 leaders that “there is no serious desire on Russia’s side to conduct peace negotiations, or negotiations at all.”
The President also said the leaders agreed that Ukraine had resisted Russian aggression more effectively than many had expected and that Russia was facing increasing difficulties.
“We all agreed that we will strengthen our support for Ukraine,” Macron said.
