Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has spoken out against the reported intention of the US administration to invite Russian President Vladimir Putin to the upcoming G20 Summit in Miami, arguing that the time has come to demand concessions from Moscow rather than offer diplomatic gestures.

“As for Putin at the G20 summit, I believe that now is the time to ask Putin to take some steps, not for us to take steps toward him,” Meloni said.

She added that Washington has already made several conciliatory moves toward Moscow in recent months but has seen no equivalent response from the Kremlin.

“The Americans, especially in recent months, have taken several steps toward Russia, so to speak, but we have not seen the same steps in return. I believe that now is the time to demand them,” the Italian PM said.

According to The Washington Post, the United States is planning to invite Putin to the G20 summit scheduled for December in Miami, which is expected to be held at US President Donald Trump’s golf club.
