President Kavelashvili meets Georgia’s newly appointed ambassador to Azerbaijan

Georgian President Mikheil Kavelashvili has met Giorgi Zakarashvili, the country’s newly appointed ambassador to Azerbaijan, ahead of his diplomatic posting in Baku.

The meeting at the Presidential Palace focused on the strategic partnership between Georgia and Azerbaijan and prospects for further strengthening bilateral ties, the President’s administration said on Wednesday.

The sides also discussed the two countries’ longstanding relations and their role in promoting peace, stability and economic development in the region.

Kavelashvili congratulated Zakarashvili on his appointment and wished him success in his diplomatic mission.

Zakarashvili, who has served as Georgia’s ambassador to Ukraine and permanent representative to the Organization for Democracy and Economic Development - GUAM since 2021, is due to begin his new post in Azerbaijan on 1 October 2026. Georgia’s Foreign Ministry lists him as holding the diplomatic rank of Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary.
