Georgian president meets WTO chief in Geneva to discuss trade and Middle Corridor

Georgian President Mikheil Kavelashvili has met World Trade Organization Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala in Geneva to discuss cooperation between Georgia and the WTO and developments in international trade.

The talks focused on Georgia's implementation of its commitments within the WTO, economic reforms and the importance of developing the multilateral trading system, the president’s press office said on Wednesday.

The two sides highlighted the contribution of Georgia's 26 years of WTO membership to the country's economic modernisation, the alignment of its trade policies with international standards and the creation of a predictable investment environment.

They also discussed Georgia's transit potential and the growing importance of the Middle Corridor.

The meeting highlighted reforms aimed at facilitating trade and infrastructure development, which were said to be strengthening Georgia's role in connectivity between Europe and Asia.

Kavelashvili reaffirmed Georgia's readiness to continue active cooperation with the WTO and support a free, fair and rules-based multilateral international trading system, the press service said.
