Georgian President Kavelashvili Pays Tribute to Fallen on Anniversary of Sukhumi’s Fall

Georgian President Mikheil Kavelashvili laid a wreath at the memorial to those who died fighting for Georgia’s territorial integrity on Saturday, as the country marked the anniversary of the fall of Sukhumi in the war in Abkhazia.

Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze, Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili, Tbilisi Mayor Kakha Kaladze and other representatives of Georgia’s executive and legislative authorities attended the commemoration, alongside family members of those killed in the conflict.

Kavelashvili paid tribute to those who lost their lives fighting for Georgia’s unity and independence.

“We remember every person who gave their life for Georgia. We owe it to their memory to safeguard peace and never lose faith that our country will ultimately be reunited,” Kavelashvili said.

The president said the anniversary also carried a responsibility to continue working towards the country’s reunification through a peaceful and consistent state policy, while preserving peace and strengthening Georgia’s state institutions.
