German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has arrived in Kyiv with a new support package for Ukraine and plans to expand joint weapons production.
According to German government officials, Merz is expected to announce a new assistance package for Ukraine during his visit.
The package includes €1 billion in military aid and an additional €350 million to support the restoration of Ukraine’s energy sector. An agreement on the joint production of various types of drones is also expected to be reached.
“I came to Kyiv today because Ukraine will need our support in the weeks ahead,” Merz said.
The German chancellor said Russia continues to strike Ukrainian cities, residential buildings and thermal power plants. He warned that if Russia is not stopped, its military machine could sooner or later be directed against other countries.
“Today, I will tell President Zelenskyy: You can continue to count on our support,” Merz said.
The German delegation also includes the economy minister and representatives of major companies, including Siemens Energy, Hensoldt, Diehl Defence and Quantum Systems.
