Nana Sander and Irakli Chkhvirkia, who were detained in connection with the October 4, 2025 anti-government protests in Georgia, have been released from prison following plea agreements.
Speaking to the media after her release, Sander said that what she described as 13 months of physical and psychological torture had come to an end.
“The 13-month torture is over, literally, both psychologically and physically. I am free,” Sander said.
She added that although she was happy to be released, she remained concerned about other prisoners whom she described as innocent and unfairly sentenced.
Sander was detained during the October 4, 2025 protest. She faced charges under two articles of Georgia's Criminal Code.
Article 225, Part 1, concerns the organisation of group violence and carries a prison sentence of six to nine years. Article 317 concerns public calls for the violent overthrow of the constitutional order or state authority and carries a sentence of up to nine years.
Chkhvirkia also faced two charges. The first, under Article 19-222, Part 2(a), concerned an alleged attempt, committed by a group, to seize or block strategic and facilities of special importance.
The second charge, under Article 225, Part 1, concerned the organisation of group violence.
Both individuals were released following plea agreements.
