Levan Khabeishvili, chairman of the political council of Georgia's opposition party United National Movement (UNM), was attacked during a live broadcast on TV Pirveli.
While speaking to the network in an outdoor live segment, a young man approached Khabeishvili and threw an egg at him, hitting his white shirt. The attacker then verbally insulted him and fled the scene after police began to approach. As he was running, the man knocked over a bystander before disappearing on foot. His face was clearly visible in footage aired by the television crew, allowing for potential identification by authorities.
“This was clearly organized. They knew exactly where I was,” Khabeishvili said on air moments after the attack. “This is the reality we live in — today it’s eggs, tomorrow it’ll be guns. Whoever tries this will get a response. No one is afraid — the Georgian people will take care of you all,” he added, directly addressing ruling party leaders in a heated statement.
The United National Movement released a statement condemning the incident and blaming the ruling Georgian Dream party and its founder Bidzina Ivanishvili.
“Just moments ago, representatives of Ivanishvili’s criminal, treasonous regime attacked the chairman of the United National Movement’s political council, Levan Khabeishvili,” the party wrote. “This is the handwriting of a criminal gang — cowardly ambushes, violence, and attempts to silence dissent through vandalism and intimidation.”
The UNM warned that if any harm comes to its leaders, members, or supporters, full responsibility will lie with the current government, which it described as a “Russian criminal regime.”
“We will never stop fighting for a strong, united, free, independent, and European Georgia. They won’t stop us — we will prevail,” the statement concluded.
