The Government of Nauru has officially announced that it has revoked its recognition of Georgia's Russian-occupied regions of Abkhazia and the Tskhinvali (South Ossetia) region as independent states and has terminated diplomatic relations with both entities.
In an official statement, the Government said it had withdrawn its recognition of the so-called Republic of South Ossetia and the so-called Republic of Abkhazia with immediate effect.
The Government added that the relevant parties will be formally notified of the decision through diplomatic channels.
Nauru recognised Georgia’s Abkhazia and Tskhinvali (South Ossetia) regions by establishing diplomatic relations with them in 2009. It has been among five countries that recognised their independence, alongside Russia, Syria, Venezuela and Nicaragua.
