Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda has said the situation in Georgia remained difficult, warning that it did not align with Europe’s understanding of democracy and democratic norms.
Speaking about recent developments, Nausėda said he was concerned by events in Georgia, noting that despite the geographical distance between the two countries, Lithuania and Georgia shared close historical and traditional ties.
“The situation in Georgia is not connected to the European understanding of democracy and democratic rules,” he said. “I am worried about the recent developments there, because although Georgia is far from Lithuania, we have very close relations, as well as historical and traditional ties.”
He added that progress would remain challenging unless democratic principles were upheld.
“Until it is understood that the rules of democracy, human rights and the rule of law must be respected, I believe the situation will continue to be difficult,” Nausėda said.
