Georgia’s parliament approves Tamaz Borashvili as security service chief

Georgia’s parliament has approved Tamaz Borashvili as the new head of the State Security Service, with 83 lawmakers voting in favour of his appointment.

A total of 97 MPs registered for the vote on Wednesday. No lawmaker voted against the nomination. The appointment was made following the nomination of Borashvili by Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze on 14 September.

Borashvili previously served as deputy head of the State Security Service and, before that, as director of its State Security Department. He has held the deputy chief position since September 2025.

His appointment follows the resignation of Geka Geladze, who stepped down as head of the State Security Service on 14 September. Geladze subsequently moved to the Ministry of Internal Affairs as a deputy minister.

Under Georgian law, the head of the State Security Service is elected by parliament for a six-year term.

Borashvili’s appointment comes after a series of changes at the top of Georgia’s security service. Geladze had been approved as its head only in April 2026, while his predecessor, Mamuka Mdinaradze, left the position in April after being appointed in September 2025.
