The Prosecutor’s Office of Georgia has brought charges against opposition leader Nika Melia on grounds of contempt of court, the agency said on Monday.

The investigation conducted by the Ministry of Internal Affairs said the incident had occurred on November 10, 2025, during an administrative court hearing at the Tbilisi City Court, where Melia “showed disrespect toward the court” by verbally insulting the presiding judge.

The offense carries a possible sentence of up to two years’ imprisonment.

The Prosecutor’s Office noted that Melia is already serving a sentence under a separate criminal conviction. As a result, prosecutors will apply to the court to schedule a preliminary hearing in the new case.
