‘They must feel every day that the war is returning to where it began’ – Ukraine strikes key targets inside Russia

Ukrainian forces struck several key targets inside Russia overnight on 30 August 2026, according to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

One of the targets was Russia’s second-largest oil refinery.

The General Staff said the refinery in the city of Kirishi has an annual processing capacity of about 20 million tonnes. A fire broke out at the facility following the strike.

The refinery reportedly produces automotive and aviation fuel, as well as diesel used to supply Russian forces.

Ukrainian forces also targeted a drone storage facility in Russia’s Rostov region and struck a military airfield in the city of Yeysk, in Krasnodar region, where a fire was also reported.

The General Staff said the extent of the damage caused by the strikes was still being assessed.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed that Ukrainian forces had struck several significant targets inside Russia overnight.

“Russia must feel every day that the war is returning to where it began,” Zelenskyy said.

“It is important that our long-range capabilities are complemented by new sanctions from our partners targeting Russia’s military infrastructure.”

The Ukrainian president said a significant share of the weapons Russia uses to attack Ukrainian cities relies on foreign-made components.

“We constantly provide our partners with details of the schemes Russia uses to circumvent sanctions. I am grateful to everyone who is helping us shut them down,” Zelenskyy said.
