Pope Leo XIV has said he will continue to speak out against war, emphasizing the growing number of innocent victims worldwide.

In an interview with Reuters, the pontiff responded to criticism from U.S. President Donald Trump, stating that he has no intention of engaging in direct debate but will remain vocal in promoting peace.

“I do not wish to enter into a debate with him. I do not believe the message of the Gospel should be used in the way some people do,” the Pope said.

“I will continue to speak out loudly against war. I will strive to promote peace, strengthen dialogue and multilateral relations between countries, in order to find fair solutions to global problems. Today, too many people are suffering. Too many innocent people are dying. I believe someone must stand up and say that there is a better way,” he added.

Earlier, Trump criticized the Pope, saying he was “weak on crime” and “terrible on foreign policy,” and expressed opposition to a pontiff who openly criticizes the U.S. president.
