Georgia and Nauru to establish diplomatic relations

Georgia and the Republic of Nauru are set to establish diplomatic relations.

The relevant agreement will be signed in New York during Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze’s visit, the government press office said on Friday.

The Georgian government today issued a decree authorising the signing of a protocol on the establishment of diplomatic relations between Georgia and the Republic of Nauru.

The signing will formally establish diplomatic ties between the two countries.

Nauru had previously been one of the few UN member states to recognize Georgian Russian-occupied Abkhazia and South Ossetia/Tskhinvali as independent states following the 2008 Russia-Georgia war.

In December 2009, Nauru recognized Abkhazia and established diplomatic relations with the territory. It also recognized Tskhinvali and established diplomatic relations with it around the same time.

That position changed in July 2026. On 21 July, Nauru’s Cabinet decided to revoke its diplomatic relations with both Abkhazia and Tskhinvali. On 30 July, the Nauruan government explicitly announced that it had withdrawn its recognition of both territories as independent states and terminated diplomatic relations with them.
