Georgia’s Interior Ministry on Monday said two citizens of the Islamic Republic of Iran have been arrested on charges linked to an alleged attempt to illegally cross the state border and transport a migrant across the border unlawfully.

According to the ministry, investigators found that one of the detainees allegedly attempted to transport the second man across Georgia’s state border in a truck under his control, bypassing the Sarpi border crossing checkpoint “illegally and covertly”.

Police detained both individuals in the border checkpoint area, the ministry said.

The offences are punishable by up to five years in prison.
