Georgian law enforcement officers have foiled an attempt to illegally bring a large number of firearms into the country, the Interior Ministry said.

Officers from the Central Criminal Police Department and the Revenue Service’s Customs Department discovered the weapons during a detailed inspection of a vehicle at the Sarpi border crossing.

Using a scanner, officers found a specially constructed hiding place containing eight firearms of various models, eight magazines and ammunition, which were seized as evidence.

The charges carry a prison sentence of up to eight years.
