One of the leaders of the libertarian party Girchi, Sandro Rakviashvili, on Tuesday criticised a parliamentary commission probing alleged crimes under the previous United National Movement government, describing it as a “political spectacle” signed to distract the public from more pressing matters.

Speaking to journalists, Rakviashvili claimed that the commission had failed to produce any meaningful results and had instead contributed to a rise in public hostility.

“This commission, in general, is a political spectacle, and the main goal of the spectacle is to divert people’s attention to insignificant issues,” he said. “In principle, to some extent, it is doing that quite effectively, but beyond that, the commission has not done anything new, important or useful – except further inciting hatred and anger.”
