Patrol police in Tbilisi have arrested two men on suspicion of the illegal possession and carrying of firearms and ammunition, Georgia’s Interior Ministry has reported.

The detainees, identified as 40-year-old V.G. (born in 1984) and 55-year-old K.S. (born in 1969), were stopped at different times by patrol officers while driving in the capital. According to the ministry, the vehicles were searched after being pulled over for inspection.

Police said the searches uncovered illegally held firearms, ammunition and magazines, which were seized as evidence.

The investigation is being conducted under Article 236 of Georgia’s Criminal Code, which carries a maximum penalty of up to seven years in prison.
