Mass Protests Sweep France as Thousands Rally Against Rising Living Costs

France is facing a new wave of mass demonstrations over rising prices and declining living standards, with authorities deploying 70,000 police officers and gendarmes nationwide to maintain public order, French newspaper Le Figaro reported.

In Paris, 16 metro stations have been temporarily closed, while authorities in Bordeaux have introduced nighttime restrictions on the movement of minors amid heightened security concerns.

The protests have brought together trade unions, student associations and members of the Yellow Vest movement, reflecting growing public frustration over the cost of living and economic pressures.

Trade union representatives estimate that approximately 250,000 people have taken to the streets across France. However, the Interior Ministry has put the number of demonstrators at 146,000.

Ahead of the demonstrations, French Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez announced a significant reinforcement of security measures.

According to French media reports, the security operation involves 110 mobile police units, 25 specialised armoured vehicles, water cannon trucks, helicopters and drones.

Protest organisers have also announced plans for further demonstrations in other regions of the country, raising the prospect of continued nationwide mobilisation.

The protesters’ central demands include measures to ease the financial burden on households, improve purchasing power and increase wages as inflation and economic uncertainty continue to fuel public dissatisfaction.

Student and youth organisations participating in the demonstrations are also calling for better educational conditions and increased government funding for the education sector.

The latest wave of protests underscores mounting pressure on the French authorities to address concerns over household finances, wages and public services, as demonstrators seek concrete measures to protect living standards.
