Shio III has called for unity, spiritual renewal and service to society in his first address following his enthronement as Catholicos-Patriarch of All Georgia.
Speaking at Svetitskhoveli Cathedral, the new Patriarch said he approached the role with humility and a deep sense of responsibility, paying tribute to his predecessors and particularly to Ilia II.
Shio III said the Georgian Orthodox Church had remained the foundation of national identity, unity and statehood since Christianity became the state religion of Georgia 1,700 years ago. He warned that modern society faced growing spiritual and moral challenges, including alienation, weakening faith and attacks on traditional values and the family.
The Patriarch called on the Church to strengthen its engagement with society and urged clergy not to wait for people only inside churches, but to reach out beyond church walls, particularly to those who may feel distant from religious life.
He also focused on the younger generation, saying children and young people needed support, love and guidance rooted in Christian faith, national values and responsibility towards the country and the Church.
Reflecting on the weight of the patriarchal office, Shio III said he prayed for the strength to carry what he described as the “heavy cross” of the Patriarchate with humility and devotion. He said he especially recognised the difficulties faced by Ilia II during his decades-long leadership of the Church.
The Patriarch concluded his address by asking the faithful to pray for him and for the future of the Georgian Orthodox Church, calling for unity in faith and love.
