Catholicos-Patriarch of All Georgia Shio III has said Christianity has played a central role in preserving Georgia’s land, language and national identity throughout the country’s history.

Addressing worshippers celebrating Svetitskhovloba holiday, the patriarch said the Georgian people had remained on the path of Christ despite numerous hardships, crediting divine grace and protection for helping the nation endure.

“Christianity has preserved our land, our language, our identity and our nationality, and has protected us to this day,” Shio III said.

He highlighted Svetitskhoveli Cathedral in Mtskheta as a major symbol of Georgia’s faith, unity and national consciousness, describing its construction as the beginning of a new spiritual era for the country.

The patriarch also referred to the Holy Tunic of Christ, which Georgian Orthodox tradition holds is buried beneath Svetitskhoveli Cathedral, and the mantle of the prophet Elijah, which is also associated with the cathedral’s sacred heritage. He described these relics as symbols of the continuity of faith and the unity of the Church.
