Brick structures and ceramic vessels have been discovered during the rehabilitation of Rustaveli Avenue in central Tbilisi, the city hall said.

The remains were found on a section of the road between Liberty Square metro station and the National Museum of Georgia.

Tbilisi City Hall said it had immediately notified the National Agency for Cultural Heritage Preservation after the archaeological material was discovered.

Specialists from the agency inspected the site and issued recommendations on how the works should proceed, according to the city hall.

"The works on this section will be carried out in accordance with the recommendations issued by the agency," the statement said.

The city hall said it routinely works with the National Agency for Cultural Heritage Preservation when archaeological layers or artefacts are uncovered during infrastructure projects in the capital.
